Beginner's Guide to Musical Theatre

For about two years now, I have been a huge fan of Broadway shows. The first cast album I listened to was Hamilton, thanks to a couple of my friends and people on the internet. After listening to that, I was instantly hooked on musical theatre. I wanted to get into more shows, but I did experience some difficulty in where to start.

In this post, I will be creating a list of songs and shows to help you decide what musicals you should consider listening to.

Hamilton tells the story of Alexander Hamilton in a modern way, going beyond what you learn in your history classes. Though, many people say Hamilton is "overrated," it does not mean the musical is any less amazing. I've seen Hamilton twice on tour, and I can tell you that it's an awesome experience.

Les Misérables tells a powerful story of Jean Valjean, a prisoner who broke his parole and later became mayor and guardian of Cosette after her mother dies. But Valjean's past catches up with him when Javert, who is in charge of the prison workforce, constantly tries to take him back to prison.

It is hard trying to pick just one song from this musical. Anastasia is based on the legend of Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia. It follows Anya, an orphan, who is trying to discover her past and where she came from. Anya meets two con men, Dmitry and Vlad, who notice the similarities between Princess Anastasia and Anya. They planned to use her to get the fortune that was being offered for Anastasia's return, but they later discover Anya may be Anastasia.

If you liked Tim Burton's Beetlejuice, then you're sure to like Beetlejuice the Musical. The musical adds more to the story of Beetlejuice. It gives more backstory on the Deetz's and why Lydia has such a dark mindset. Beetlejuice has more of a character, and you see him longer than 17 minutes (which is the amount of screen-time he has in the original movie).
